Did you know that Optegra can give people with cataracts the secondary benefit of vision correction?
In fact, Clarivu can correct both long and shortsightedness and eliminates cataracts in one simple, permanent lens replacement procedure – even if you’ve got astigmatism. It gives you freedom from cataracts, glasses and contacts lenses in one proven procedure.
What are Cataracts?
Cataracts, which are caused by a clouding in the lens of the eye, are the most commonly-diagnosed eye condition in adults aged 55 and over. Cataracts tend to develop gradually. In the early stages they can be managed with glasses or contact lenses. When the cloudy area begins to grow in size, however, it can start to cause blurred vision, double vision and light sensitivity. It can eventually lead to vision loss. 77% of people aged over 70 are likely to develop cataracts, but younger people with a family history of this condition, or anyone with a medical problem such as diabetes or kidney disease, may also be susceptible.
Living with Cataracts
In the early stages of a cataract, glasses or contact lenses can help correct minor visual problems. But there are no non-surgical cataract treatments, such as eye drops, exercise or glasses, to make the cataract disappear once it has formed. Eventually the condition may worsen to the point where vision is seriously impaired. If this happens, the most effective treatment is to surgically remove the affected lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Cataracts surgery is safe, effective and painless.
The Optegra Treatment
Cataract surgery is typically performed under local anaesthetic on an out-patient basis and can take less than half an hour. The surgeon makes a tiny incision on the surface of the eye and uses ultrasound energy to break up the cloudy lens, which is then removed and replaced with the new permanent artificial lens.
Modern cataract eye surgery is now a bespoke service, customised to the individual patient. There are a wide variety of lenses available, many of which offer a secondary benefit of vision correction. Your consultant will discuss your options with you on a one-to-one basis.
